The Best Time To Think About Landscape Improvements

Landscaping Company Merrimack Valley MA NH
Here in the northeast in January, landscaping might not be top-of-mind but it's actually a great time to start thinking about landscape improvements for next year for your home or business.  Here are some expert tips and things to consider:
Planning
  • It's a great time to make an appointment with a landscape professional at Cumming Landscaping as we are typically less rushed this time of year and can help you plan out the improvements to your landscaping.
  • Gardening catalogs should have arrived by now. Start a list of items that you want to purchase for spring. This is also a good time to review pictures you have taken of your gardens during the past growing season. You can see what you might need to add to your gardens and yard.

Shrubs and Trees
  • As long as the ground is not frozen, you can plant trees and shrubs in your landscape. Be sure to mulch transplants and keep them well watered.
  • Prune trees and shrubs that are dormant or rejuvenate overgrown shrubs by severely cutting them back. Keep in mind that if you prune spring flowering shrubs, like azaleas and forsythia, you are pruning off their spring flowers.
  • Bring Witch Hazel branches indoors. The blossoms are very fragrant. Enjoy cut branches of beautyberry and winterberry holly with their colorful berries.
    Perennials, Annuals, and Bulbs

  • Remove heavy layers of stray leaves that may have accumulated around perennials. They can mat down and smother perennials, and they promote rotting.
  • Empty the soil from your container gardens. Add the soil to your garden beds or to the compost pile. Clean, sterilize, and store the pots. They will be ready for planting next year.
  • Plant paperwhite narcissus bulbs in a shallow container of soil or gravel. They will bloom indoors during the winter months. They need no special cold treatment, only a steady supply of moisture. Keep the container in bright sunlight. You might have to stake or tie flowering stems upright if they grow too floppy. These delicate little flowers send out a fragrance that will permeate your home.
Chores and Maintenance
  • Continue to keep bird feeders full. Word will get around, and many visitors will come to call during the winter months if you provide a steady supply of suet and seed!
  • From an environmental standpoint, spreading sawdust, sand, or cat litter is the best way to deal with icy sidewalks, steps and driveways. If you prefer to use a de-icer, try urea nitrogen fertilizer. It can burn plants if heavily concentrated, but used with restraint it actually helps fertilize grass and shrubs adjacent to treated areas.
  • Drain your hoses and put them away so they don't freeze and burst.
  • Clean and oil your garden tools for winter storage. Place some sand and oil in a large bucket, then slide your garden tools in and out of the sand. This will do an excellent job of cleaning them, as well as applying a light coat of oil that will prevent rusting.
  • Winter is a good time to replace garden tools that have seen better days. Prices are generally lower this time of year.

Shrub Trimming Merrimack Valley, Lowell, Westford, Billerica, Dracut, Tewksbury...

For the best shrub trimming services in Chelmsford MA, Tyngsborough, Lowell, Westford, Billierica, Dracut, Tewksbury and other Merrimack Valley towns please call (978) 458-2145 today.

Shrub trimming and pruning are essential for proper growth. Maintaining your shrubs will add to the design of your landscape. Proper trimming requires knowing when and how, to achieve the best results for your landscaping. Becoming familiar with your trees and shrubs will help you determine the proper shrub trimming time.

Scheduled Shrub Trimming

Regular trimming can make shrubs stronger during windy and stormy conditions. Without trimming, many shrubs can fall victim to disease and may suffer from crowding due to excess growth.

Most shrubs will display their appreciation for trimming with healthy balanced growth. Same is true of lawn mowing, the grass will return the favor.  Simply by removing dead branches or shoots, it is possible to stop the progress of disease that can kill the entire tree or shrub.

Many shrubs need a seasonal trim to look good for the following year. Untrimmed shrubs will leave a shaggy appearance. Eventually the overgrowth will flop over in wind and rain.

Shrub trimming all season long is best for reducing the size of overgrown trees and shrubs. Neglected bushes often require extensive trimming to make them attractive again. Hedges that are trimmed on a regular basis encourage a hearty structure. Hedges that have not been trimmed for a few seasons develop several problems. They grow too tall, have bare spots or lean into the yard.

When To Trim Shrubs

Spring indicates the beginning of the growing season for shrubs and trees. Spring trimming is performed prior to leaves and buds sprouting. It is an ideal time since no foliage is present, thus making the trimming of your trees and shrubs an easier process. Shrub trimming in the spring is the most important time for stimulating new branches and filling in the shape of your trees and shrubs.

Shrub trimming during the summer months, when growth is rampant, will prepare your trees and shrubs for the fall season. Summer is the time to make more significant cuts to your trees and shrubs. You will be able to identify how much vegetation has grown and remove the necessary foliage. If you are trying to remove unwanted growth with a one season trimming, summer is the time.

Fall is the time to prepare the shrubs for the winter and the next growing season.  This entails being more aggressive with bush trimming. Cutting down perennials is a good idea before they fall into a heap of brown foliage.

Mulch Services Lowell, Westford, Billierica, Dracut, Tewksbury (Merrimack Valley)

For the best mulching services in Chelmsford MA, Tyngsborough, Lowell, Westford, Billierica, Dracut, Tewksbury and other Merrimack Valley towns please call (978) 458-2145 today.

Other than the obvious aesthetic value, Did you know that mulch can also be great for your garden?
Here’s how:

1.  Uniform moisture retention
Everyone knows that plants need water to grow; but in the summer heat, much of the water you give to your plants evaporates before they can be sufficiently nourished. Adding a layer of mulch to your garden solves this problem by retaining moisture and letting your plants get the water they need.

    2.  Cooler soil
All plants require some sunlight to survive, but too much can be a bad thing. Mulch retains moisture, so it also stays cooler during the hottest part of the day, giving your plants a cool buffer from the summer’s blaze.

      3.  Reduced soil erosion from watering
Watering your plants can actually cause them damage. Too much water pressure can kill frail plants or erode the soil around them until there’s not much left at the base. A layer of mulch not only reduces this erosion, but can also protect your plants from soil-borne fungal diseases that may splash up while watering.

        4.  Discouraged weed growth
When you add a layer of mulch to your garden, you deprive weeds of all-important sunlight and discourage their growth. You may come across a resilient dandelion that grows up through the surface, but loose mulch should make it easy to uproot weeds.

In addition to mulching, we provide a wide range of landscaping services to Northerneastern Massachusetts and southerm New Hampshire.  Give us a call today at (978) 458-2145.

Tree Planting, Bushes, Flowers, Shrubs & More!

The right plantings can immediately transform any property. We’ll properly select and place the appropriate flowers, bushes or trees for your site and zone. Organic Lawn Care - Go GREEN in 2012!

Organic fertilizer is one of the best options for safely fertilizing your lawn and garden. Slowly but surely, chemical-based fertilizers are becoming less popular as more Americans learn and understand how unsafe and environmentally unfriendly chemical fertilizers are. Organic lawn care is part of a more "green" (environmentally safe and friendly), natural approach to gardening; lawn care and using organic fertilizer falls under this natural gardening approach.

Organic lawn care basically takes a holistic, preventative approach to gardening and lawn care rather than reacting to various gardening problems by using chemical pesticides or herbicides. By building healthy soil, many of the problems with lawns are avoided, eliminating the need for poisons and harsh reactionary measures.

          What Exactly is Lawn Fertilizer?

Fertilizer is any substance, such as manure or a mixture of nitrates, used to make soil more fertile. Organic lawn fertilizers, which are known for their slow-release capabilities (chemical fertilizers release nutrients rapidly which is not as beneficial to the soil), benefit the soil as well as your grass. These fertilizers work to improve soil structure and have long-lasting beneficial effects on soil microbes.

          Organic Fertilizers Vs. Chemical Fertilizer

Here's a comparison which will show how much better organic fertilizer is for your soil.
          • Organic = Non-burning (won't harm delicate seedling roots)
          • Chemical = May burn plants (and harm delicate seedling roots)
          • Organic = Improve soil structure
          • Chemical = Leaching can pollute groundwater

          • Organic = Increase water-holding capacity
          • Chemical = Loss of fertilizer due to leaching means soil requires many applications

          • Organic = Increase nutrient holding capacity
          • Chemical = Can make soil toxic after continuous use

          • Organic = Promotes earthworms and soil micro-organisms
          • Chemical = Mineral salts can build up over time and kill off soil microbes

          • Organic = Buffers soil from chemical imbalances
          • Chemical = High nitrogen levels may repel earthworms

          • Organic = Improves soil over time
          • Chemical = Over the long run can deplete soil

          Types of Organic Fertilizer

Dry Organic Fertilizer: Dry organic fertilizer is often made from rock, phosphate, green-sand, steamed bone meal or kelp, or a combination of these. They are formulated to provide balanced amounts of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus as well as essential micronutrients.

Liquid Fertilizer/ Foliar Fertilizer: Foliar feeding is an alternate method to heavy watering or root drenching of plants. Foliar fertilizer delivers nutrients through the leaves of plants and is sprayed on the plants. This organic fertilizing method is a great way to improve the health of your plants. Keep in mind that liquid foliage fertilizers are excellent for plants already rooted in pots or in your garden, as it allows you to continue feeding your plants after they are established. Liquid fertilizers, sometimes composed of fish emulsion and compost tea, generally have a much quicker release than organic dry fertilizers, so you can save that special plant immediately if need be.

          Common Organic Fertilizer Ingredients:

          • Bird and animal manures: Good nutrient source and chock-full of microorganisms. Should be well aged or composted before applying directly to the garden.
          • Blood meal: Slow-release source of nitrogen plus trace minerals. Apply just before planting and use sparingly.
          • Fish meal/emulsion: Source of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and trace elements. Releases quickly.
          • Greensand: Rich in potassium and numerous micronutrients. Can be used to loosen clay soils. Apply 5-10 lbs per 100 square feet.
          • Shellfish meal: Strong source of calcium (23%), nitrogen, phosphorus and micro-nutrients. May also be used to inhibit root-knot nematodes.
          • Rock phosphate: Great for flowering plants and provides a 10-year phosphate reserve.
Organic fertilizer provides the carbohydrates soil organisms require. Chemicals don’t.  Call Bruce Cumming Landscaping today (978) 458-2145 to take your yard organic!

          No Crabgrass And No Chemicals

Corn gluten meal spread in late winter works just as well as chemicals – without possibly harmful effects for your family and pets.

Corn gluten meal (CGM) is a natural substitute for synthetic pre-emergence herbicides. Pre-emergence herbicides attack seeds while they're still in the ground, before the seedlings emerge from the soil. CGM is a by-product of commercial corn milling that contains the protein fraction of the corn. Its use poses no health risk to people or animals. In fact, because it is 60% protein, corn gluten meal is used as feed for cattle, poultry, fish, and dogs. In addition to the 60% protein, corn gluten meal is 10% nitrogen, by weight.

The use of corn gluten meal as an herbicide was discovered during turfgrass disease research conducted at Iowa State University. CGM was observed to prevent grass seeds from sprouting. Further research has shown that it also effectively prevents other seeds from sprouting, including seeds from many weeds such as crabgrass, chickweed, and even dandelions.

Corn gluten meal is effective only against seeds, not existing plants. Annual weeds that are already up and growing will not be killed by products made of corn gluten meal. They'll die on their own, though, by the end of autumn. But most of the seeds they produce later in the season shouldn't sprout - provided you've applied the CGM properly and at the correct time. Crabgrass, foxtail, purslane, and prostrate pigweed are examples of annual weeds found in lawns.

Existing perennial weeds such as quackgrass, plantain, and dandelions won't be damaged by CGM, either. And, they'll still come back from one year to the next because their roots survive most winters. What corn gluten meal will do is stop the seeds they shed each summer, so the population of these particular weeds won't increase. In fact, because some will die of "natural" causes, their numbers should actually decrease after several years of consistent CGM use.

How to apply corn gluten meal to lawns

Corn gluten meal is available in powdered and pelletized forms, both of which work equally well. The pelletized form is easier to use, though.

Apply corn gluten meal first in late April/early May, then a second time around mid-August. Spread the product evenly, at a rate of twenty pounds per 1,000 square feet of lawn. Water it lightly into the soil in order to activate it. The CGM should remain effective for five to six weeks each time you apply it.
Most annual and perennial weed seeds sprout in spring or early summer, but there are a number of "winter annuals" that may sprout either in spring or fall. Chickweed, shepherd's purse, and speedwell (Veronica) are examples of winter annuals that may be found growing in lawns. When these seeds sprout in fall, their roots live over winter, giving them a head start the following spring. By the end of that growing season, they die, just like other annuals. Because of these winter annuals, you should apply corn gluten meal to the lawn in late summer as well as spring.

Results of using CGM on lawns

Don't expect to see instant results from using corn gluten meal. Every consecutive year you apply CGM - assuming proper timing and rate - should give you better results than the year before. By the fourth year, weed control should be very good.

When you use corn gluten meal you are also fertilizing the lawn, which encourages it to grow thicker and help exclude weeds. Applying CGM at the recommended rate of twenty pounds per 1,000 square feet, twice a year, gives your lawn a total of four pounds of nitrogen annually - more than enough to meet its needs. Corn gluten meal does not supply phosphorus or potassium, however. You should have your soil tested periodically to see if either nutrient should be added, and in what amount.

          Garden applications

Corn gluten meal may be used safely in gardens around established perennial plants, to keep weed seeds from sprouting. It can also be used after transplants have been in the soil long enough to have "taken hold." Follow label recommendations for application rates.

Wait until seedlings are up and growing well before applying corn gluten meal to flower or vegetable gardens where seeds were sown directly into the soil. CGM will stop most seeds from germinating.

          Winter Kill on Lawns

Extreme winter conditions can put a lawn at risk of damage

Winter kill (or winterkill) with regards to lawn, refers to any severe damage or death sustained by the turf during the winter months. For the most part, well cared for turf is resilient and strong, but winter weather can be unforgiving to even the best lawns. Winter kill can occur under a variety of conditions.
          • Ice cover - periods of snow followed by warm temperatures, then freezing temperatures, can create a thick layer of ice on a lawn. Most cool season grasses can handle these conditions but if ice persists for more than 30 days damaged or killed turf can result.
          • Snow cover - a persistent snow cover can create warmer, insulated conditions near the soil surface. Gray or pink snow mold may break out in these conditions. Mouse activity may also occur and leave noticeable trails in the grass in the spring.
          • Bare dormant grass - can become dessicated or dried out when exposed to winter winds and extreme temperatures over long periods of time. Foot traffic over bare dormant grass is less desirable than snow cover.
Ice, wind, and scalping can inflict the most serious damage by injuring the sensitive crown of the plant. Extreme temperatures, wind, and freeze/thaw conditions can inflict the worst damage. If winterkill occurs from these conditions, recovery may take longer than expected.

Winters can often be unpredictable and may put your lawn through any or all of these conditions during the course of a winter. The best thing to do is make sure the grass has hardened off, you've "put the lawn to bed" properly, monitor the weather, and deal with conditions as they occur.

Should you get out there with an ice chipper in the middle of January and chip away four inches of ice off your lawn? Normally I wouldn't recommend it, but if you have a lawn that is a showpiece, you may want to take it that far. However, a lawn managed on a sound lawn care program should be able to recover from most of what winter can put it through.

Looking at Landscaping as an Investment

The National average cost of a new landscape installation is ten percent of the value of the home and property.  What return on investment (besides beautification, energy conservation and privacy) can be expected?  A recent Clemson University study addressed this concer.

Researchers conducted a study of home sale prices and compared the results based on varying levels of landscape quality. Not only were the type, size and condition of plantings considered, but also the overall design. Landscapes were rated "poor," "average," "good," or "excellent." Results concluded that those homes with good and excellent landscapes had a fourteen to seventeen percent higher sale value than those in the poor and average categories.

This study was done in Greenville, SC and included 218 single family residences. Though results may vary slightly by region, the study indicates that the monetary return on investment for quality landscaping certainly justifies the cost; better landscapes bring higher sale value.

In addition to sale value, proper landscape installation will insure less expense over time and greater satisfaction. In my years of landscaping experience, I've been required to replant and/or repair numerous landscapes which were originally installed without proper planning and technique. This ends up being more expensive than doing the job right the first time.
